This wooden diptych depicts two beloved Marian images: the Madonna of Perpetual Help and the Madonna Salus Populi Romani, the “Madonna of Rome.”
The Salus Populi Romani is an ancient icon housed in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, deeply venerated as the protector of the Roman people. Pope Francis had a special devotion to this image: he prayed before it at the beginning and end of every apostolic journey, and entrusted to it some of the most critical moments of his pontificate. In a final act of love and faith, he chose to be laid to rest in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major, near the sacred icon he so often visited.
This diptych captures a deep connection to Mary’s constant presence, offering a reminder of her perpetual help and protection.
